Powerful Prayer Legacy Passes into Glory

evc-sm.jpgEvelyn Christenson once prayed a very bold prayer: She asked the Lord to let her “teach the world to pray.” God answered that prayer for Evelyn in a profound way, as she traveled internationally and wrote best-selling books on prayer. Her books have been translated into more than 60 languages, and her teaching has been broadcast into China, India, South America, and the Caribbean.

Now, at age 89, Evelyn finished her calling here on earth and entered eternity on Tuesday afternoon, November 1, 2011. Two of her children were with her as she gazed into heaven and repeated over and over: “It’s so beautiful. It’s so beautiful. It’s so beautiful. Jesus is holding my hand.”

Known for her love for Jesus and her heart for the salvation of the lost, Evelyn never stopped praying for revival. Although failing in health over the last few years, she continued working on writing another book—even in her final days. She also prayed with people and led some to Christ as many came to visit her in her small assisted living apartment.

Evelyn’s first book, What Happens When Women Pray, sold more than three million copies. Her second book, Lord Change Me, topped more than two million in sales. She published several other books, including an evangelism praying study guide that was used by the A.D. 2000 movement. She was also a founding member of America’s National Prayer Committee, and was instrumental in the shaping of the National Day of Prayer.

Evelyn also served on the initial advisory board of Pray! magazine, and the first Prayer Commission of the Baptist General Conference (now Converge Worldwide).

As Evelyn wrote books and spoke in workshops on every continent, her prayer support came from a faithful group of women who acted as the advisory board of her “United Prayer Ministry.” For nearly 40 years, these women prayed for Evelyn—many of the original women continuing to do so even as Evelyn passed away.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Harold. She has three children and eight grandchildren. Services will be held on Monday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. at Calvary Church in Roseville, MN.
